Buyer's Guide

XLPE vs PVC Insulated Cable: Which One for Your Project?

Short answer: choose XLPE for power distribution, medium voltage, hot climates and any feeder where current capacity matters. Choose PVC for low-voltage building wiring and control circuits where flexibility and price come first.

Values are typical per IEC 60502. Always size cable to your local code and installation conditions.

A simple selection rule

  • Above 1 kV, or buried / tray feeders above 35 mm² → XLPE.
  • Ambient above 35 °C or grouped cables with heavy derating → XLPE.
  • Metro, hospitals, data centres, tunnels → XLPE with LSZH sheath.
  • Building wiring, sockets, lighting, control circuits → PVC is fine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace PVC cable with XLPE of the same size?

Yes. XLPE carries more current at the same cross-section, so a like-for-like swap gives extra thermal margin. You can sometimes downsize by one step — confirm with a voltage-drop and short-circuit check.

Is XLPE cable more expensive than PVC?

Per metre, slightly. But because XLPE can often use a smaller conductor for the same load, the installed cost of copper is frequently equal or lower on feeders above 35 mm².

Which is better for hot climates like Indonesia, Vietnam or the Middle East?

XLPE. Its 90 °C rating gives more headroom when ambient and ground temperatures are high, reducing derating losses.

When is PVC still the right choice?

Low-voltage building wiring, control cables and short final circuits where flexibility and low cost matter more than current capacity.
